User feedback and internal testing have shown that exploring and finding a font is challenging due to the long font list and the inability to preview pro fonts.

Users who change fonts are more likely to tap the save icon in the editor than other actions. Hence, making personalization more accessible could lead to a higher willingness to save and export designs.

By reducing the required steps for text customization and increasing awareness of the value provided by the pro fonts, we expect positive feedback, increased subscription rates, and more frequent text edits.

A Quicker Way to Discover Fonts
To boost user engagement with customizing fonts, we decided to make the font picker accessible through the text editor. We also added a recommended section to let users quickly discover popular free and pro fonts. However, this new section and the text toolbar's fixed height made the layout design challenging. A new layout that is easy to use and aligned with the editor's design style was developed after various layout tests.
Previously, fonts with different styles, such as thin, bold, italic, etc., were listed one after the other. Therefore, the font list became much longer, and it was difficult to compare font faces. To address this, grouping font styles became necessary. The challenge was that not all fonts had multiple styles, and it was crucial to avoid adding another layer to the hierarchy that would require users to enter and exit before selecting a different typeface.

Previously, when users scrolled through the font picker, the fonts were instantly applied to the selected text, enabling users to quickly find their preferred fonts. However, free users were unable to preview how their text would look with pro fonts.
I developed several prototypes and conducted internal testing to enable free users to preview pro fonts with an intuitive interaction. Furthermore, I emphasized that users must upgrade to a pro membership to utilize pro fonts.

Text Editor Color Chips
Color features have one of the highest engagement rates in the editor. To make this process more direct and easy for our users, we decided to find a minimal way of introducing it in the text editor. Selecting an optimal number of color chips would help keep the feature minimal. Colors had to be chosen meticulously to offer choices evenly along the color spectrum and be easily distinguishable by users even with color vision deficiencies.
As applied colors became shown in the text editor, it was crucial to maintain high contrast between the text and the background for readability. To address this, I established a guideline for automatically changing the text editor's background color if the contrast between the background and text color falls below a certain threshold.

Results and Lessons Learned

Engagement with text color and fonts increased by 33.1% and 180%, respectively. The significant 180% increase in font selection rate and 38.2% increase in subscription rate via pro fonts demonstrates that allowing users to preview all fonts, with clear instructions for subscription, effectively communicated the value we aimed to provide. Furthermore, we achieved a 38.2% boost in the new user subscription rate from all subscription events, excluding the onboarding funnel. Since all new users encounter the text editing feature through the tutorial immediately after onboarding, it's evident that the new text editor has had a positive impact.
On the other hand, the increase for the users who tap the "save icon" in the editor was minimal by 3.3%. This outcome suggests we need to explore ways to enhance the results so users are more inclined to export their designs after editing.
Additionally, the rate of users who tap the "Done" button within the text editor declined by 19.1%. It is possible to argue that additional features within the text editor created a need to undo for the changes applied. Therefore, this led to more people tapping cancel to go back to the initial state. Further investigation is required to determine if this issue needs to be addressed in future updates.
